Storyline
The artist, Muzna Abu Salim, from Gaza, was able to turn her hobby of the Japanese art of knitting into a source of living as she makes and sells small, stuffed toys and Ramadan decorations in her home.
Muzna uses wool and silk thread in her work and she promotes her products by displaying them in some gift stores, participating in some local exhibitions, and through social media platforms.
Muzna sells her products at reasonable prices so that all the children of Gaza can own a knitted toy that alleviates their suffering amid difficult living conditions and violence and war.

- (SOUNDBITE) Muzna Abu Salim – Japanese crochet artist:
“I have been making these toys for a long time. This craft is called Amigurumi. It is a Japanese craft that dates back to the nineteenth century and does not exist in Gaza. It is interesting, distinctive, and doesn’t look like regular crochet. I make detailed patterns and specific models for each toy. Many children in the exhibitions come to buy them. The toys don’t harm babies if they put it in their mouth.”

“I use wool and silk thread. I sell the toys at reasonable prices, although they are handmade and time and effort consuming. During the month of Ramadan, I make some Ramadan lanterns, the crescent because people like them.”
