Storyline:
Coinciding with Women’s Day, civil society organizations in Iraq called for the enactment of new laws and amendments to the current laws to protect women from domestic and workplace violence, since the Iraqi constitution includes gaps in some legal clauses that would disturb women’s life.
Shot list:
(SOUNDBITE) Fatna Baban – Head of the Arab Union for Specialized Women in Iraq:
“We demand the government and parliament to amend the current legislation and laws to be in the interest of women because the violations and abuses continue. Women represent the family, and the updated legislation would reflect on the entire family.”
(SOUNDBITE) Taqwa Saad – Activist for women and children:
“We demand a law to protect women from domestic violence. We also demand support for women’s organizations because we work on empowering women socially and financially to enable them to become decision-makers”
(SOUNDBITE) Mona Jaafar – Activist for women and children:
“Iraqi laws should be amended to stop violence against women and laws should be enacted to protect women domestically. There is no law regulating family relations, we only have a personal status law that regulates cases of marriage, divorce, and alimony. The new government is supposed to pay attention to women and legislate laws that protect them”
