Storyline

Volunteer “Inclusion Crew” launched the first play therapy room called “puzzle”, which provides behavioral and psychological care to children aged 3 to 6.

The room seeks to early detection of behavior problems and disorders in children by providing a safe communication environment in which children can express their thoughts, needs, and feelings.

Play therapy is a type of counseling or psychotherapy that uses play to assess or treat psychological and social issues.

The idea of a play therapy room came because Gaza lacks such space, especially in kindergartens. This play room is full of elements that aid treatment process and includes professionally trained specialists to deal with this category of children using more than one methodology depending on the child’s condition.

The Inclusion Crew seeks to expand their project to cover all of the kindergartens in Gaza.

  • (SOUNDBITE) Reem Jaarour – Project Director of the Play Therapy Room:

“The Inclusion Crew came up with a play therapy room in kindergarten because we live in an unstable place in Gaza. Children who grow up in an unstable environment will have different behaviors. Not to forget Covid and its impact on everyone. Therefore, it was necessary to deal with behaviors such as stubbornness, distraction, excessive movement, and intolerance by the presence of psychologists.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Reem Jaarour – Project Director of the Play Therapy Room:

“All psychological disorders are called disorders after the age of 4. The appropriate age even if we want to redress these disorders is in the kindergarten stage. It leaves positive results on the human personality and builds a normal personality. All the existing treatments can be provided to children employing cognitive-behavioral therapy in particular, and we can implement them in the play therapy room, developing children’s skills and improving them in a healthy environment. Our work is not limited to treating disorders, but we communicate with children and their families. This room was created for children and their families. The work of specialists requires the presence of the child’s parents to succeed.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Manar Selmi – Psychologist in the play therapy room:

“Playing in the room gives the child a safe space through playing. For example, a child with aggressive behavior can find more than one game inside the room, such as martial arts, planes, etc. These games reveal if the child is aggressive or has any symptoms. We give them space to express their feelings in a safe space.”
