Storyline:

The fifth edition of the Street Circus International Festival has kicked off in the Tunisia capital, Tunis, featuring various performance artists from different countries around the world. The event, which runs from June 23rd through June 28th, took place in public squares in Tunis and other governorates. Artists from about ten countries including France, Chile, Sweden, Spain, Germany, Guinea, and Italy, are participating in the festival, which was first held in 2018. Performing arts involved in the event included physical acts, drama, spoken word, puppetry, and circus arts. In the opening show, the Paparoni Circus on Avenue Habib Bourguiba presented an acrobatic show that involved tightrope walking while using unicycles and fireworks, in amazing dance moves.

Soundbite (Caroline – model from Chile):

“I am participating in this festival in its fifth edition for the third time. I participated before in the first and second editions. I noticed that there are more participants from different countries taking part in the event. In previous editions, there were only five or six participants, but now we are more than ten. I am happy to be here in Tunisia.”

SOUNDBITE (Haitham Kasdawy – Director of the Paparoni Circus):

“More than ten countries participated in this year’s festival. We plan to perform on a larger scale and in more governorates than before. We hope that the Tunisian audience will like it.”

SOUNDBITE (Shakira Al Ramah – Programmer at the National Center of Puppetry Arts):

“Such festivals are enjoyable events in the summer. The Paparoni Circus is a group of young people performing at the fifth edition of the festival. The National Center of Puppetry Arts is participating in the festival, too. We should support such events. Groups will perform in several governorates, not only in the capital.”

SOUNDBITE (Rawdah – an attendee at the festival):

“The shows are beautiful and children enjoyed watching. It is a good chance for people to alleviate stress amid current conditions.”
