Storyline:

The Israeli authorities announced the closure of the Beit Hanoun (Erez) checkpoint, starting from Sunday, in front of the estimated twelve thousand Palestinian workers and merchants, until further notice, in response to the firing of rockets from the Gaza Strip, according to what was announced by the Coordinator of Israeli Government Activities, Ghassan Alyan, after Security deliberations session, held by IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi.

The Israeli authorities noted that the decision to reopen the checkpoint will be taken based on a subsequent assessment of the situation in the Strip.

Erez is the only crossing for individuals between the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian territories, in light of the Israeli siege imposed on the Strip for more than 15 years.

Its closure is a violation of previous understandings between Israel and the Palestinian factions, while the daily damages resulting from its closure are estimated at more than three million shekels.

  • SOUNDBITE (Talal Abu Zarifa – Member of the Democratic Front):

“Closing the Beit Hanoun crossing is a crime practiced by Israel against the residents of the Gaza Strip, and it is another form of the siege. Israel must realize that the economic and social conditions in the Strip cannot bear such measures, and it will lose as a result of this step. We call on to take urgent action to open this crossing, as it is the only crossing that connects Gaza with the 48 lands. Urgent action is required to put an end to this crime and to reopen the crossing for merchants and citizens.”

  • SOUNDBITE (Sami Al-Amsi – Head of Trade Unions in Gaza):

“Certainly, closing the Beit Hanoun crossing to 12,000 workers in the Gaza Strip will deprive 12,000 families of their daily income, and will negatively affect the fragile Palestinian economy inside Gaza, which has been suffering from a siege for 16 years. Certainly, this decision, as we approach Eid al-Fitr, will negatively affect these families and the economy. We appeal to everyone, and the United Nations, to put pressure on Israel to reopen the Beit Hanoun crossing at this time. The daily damages are estimated at 3 million shekels.”
