Storyline:

The Iraqi Joint Operations Command launched multiple campaigns to pursue ISIS members in different areas of the country.

This move and follow-up coincide with security concerns about repeated violations and attacks launched by the organization’s elements on security points and areas.

The Iraqi forces managed to reach an ISIS tunnel in Nineveh, where they found explosive devices, landmines, projectiles, bombs, and missiles.

(SOUNDBITE) Retired Major General Ali Al-Adari – Security and military expert:

“The purpose of this military action is to search for ISIS elements and its sleeper cells and to prevent their entry into Iraqi from the Syrian borders. According to the Iraqi forces, the Syrian border is not well protected by the Syrian side, so the burden will be greater on the Iraqi forces to work constantly, especially in areas that we expect to be fertile grounds for hostile actions.”

(SOUNDBITE) Nabil Al-Azzawi – Researcher in security and political matter:

“It is a proactive and qualitative operation carried out by the armed forces, especially in the areas that have recently witnessed the growth of terrorist ISIS cells. It aims to prevent ISIS infiltration across the Syrian border. I believe that this process will have good results and outcomes, especially at this time.”
