Storyline
People of Gaza are keen on welcoming the month of Ramadan with decorations, which have become an annual ritual.
Safaa dedicated part of her home to make unique designs, inspired by the Egyptian decorations that attract her customers, especially since most of the shops in the sector run out of decorations, which prompted people to buy her products.
She started her work, which has become a source of income for her and her family, about three months ago. She also designs trays and serving plates with Ramadan patterns printed on them.

- (SOUNDBITE) Safa Abu Ataya – Ramadan decorations maker:
“Ramadan comes once a year. It has its rituals. Everyone is interested in Ramadan decorations. I use wood and certain fabrics in making the decorations. It is known as Ramadan-special fabric. For the lighting, some pieces need electricity and others are battery-operated.”
- (SOUNDBITE) Safa Abu Ataya – Ramadan decorations maker:
“I also make serving trays with Ramadan patterns printed on it in different sizes. I was inspired by the Egyptian decorations too. I started working about three or four months ago to catch up with the season in which every family is keen on bringing joy into their home. We in Gaza suffer from the siege and wars, so such things can bring joy, especially to children.”
