“I am Hajar Madini. I hold a master’s degree in mathematics. During my studies, I could not focus on my hobby as Mathematics requires a lot of time. When I finished my studies, I started studying Arabic calligraphy at the National Center for Calligraphy Arts. It was a hobby. It is thought that calligraphy art is well known, but calligraphy dresses are not. I began printing calligraphy on traditional Tunisian dresses.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Hajar Madini – Designer of traditional costumes and accessories:

“Since I mastered Arabic calligraphy that is known to us as Kairouanese calligraphy and Kairouan is famous for its type of fabric, I thought to combine calligraphy with this fabric to make artistic clothing.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Hajar Madini – Designer of traditional costumes and accessories:

“I used Arabic calligraphy in form of letters; I mean no specific text will be read so that everyone, not only Tunisians and Muslims, can wear my designs. I worked with foreigners and they considered the dresses as a piece of art.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Hajar Madini – Designer of traditional costumes and accessories:

“People like my designs because I make unique pieces. I always try to be unique, even if these dresses are similar to dresses in others countries, but I try to leave my touch. I always try to give a Tunisian character to my dresses.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Hajar Madini – Designer of traditional costumes and accessories:

“This work requires several phases. I am not alone, I work with a team. We discuss the designs before finalizing them”
