  • (SOUNDBITE) Faeq al-Sayyab – Grandson of the poet Badr Shaker al-Sayyab:

“This is the house of the great poet Badr Shakir al-Sayyab. It receives a large number of visitors, especially on his death anniversary. This place is neglected. It has no reception or staff to welcome the visitors. It should be renovated by specialized people, but it has not been renovated for more than 12 years. We have not seen any of the officials coming to the place. We sold the house to the government so they turn it into a museum that commemorates our ancestors.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Dr. Abdullah Al-Salem – University of Basra:

“The poet was able to make Basra known to the world through his poetry. Badr Shakir al-Sayyab, was born in Jekur town in 1926. He talked about this city and all its details; places, names, talks, customs and traditions, in his poems. He was inspired by English poetry after studying at the Higher Teachers Institute in Baghdad. He was talented, moved forward in his poetic career, and succeeded despite the hardships, suffering, and marginalization he faced. He overcame all the obstacles and made a bright name in Arab poetry.
