Storyline:

Tunis Science City organized a three-day event to introduce Arabic calligraphy and its cursive styles.

Some calligraphers believe that calligraphy is an integration of art and geometry that employs angles and curves. It also requires a lot of patience and perseverance.

This event is the third,  held by the Science City in this field, and more are planned for next December.

(SOUNDBITE) Huda Al-Wargi – Coordinator of Arabic Calligraphy event:

“Arabic calligraphy is an art and science that employs angles and curves. It requires a lot of patience and perseverance. This is not the first event organized by the Science City in this field, and more events are to come in December. The event is open to the public; we have created two teams; children and adults, to attend workshops presented by the two specialists in calligraphy; Mrs. Bashir Al-Daraji and Mrs. Imad Al-Sitti. Art and science are integrated and this is visible in the events the Science City holds. A lot of people from different categories participated including doctors, engineers, and artists. The first edition was in 2019 on the International Day of Arabic, when we discovered people’s love for Arabic calligraphy.”

(SOUNDBITE) Bashir Al-Daraji – Professor of Arabic Calligraphy at the National Center for Arabic Calligraphy:

“This art is used to decorate Islamic buildings, walls, or museums. It is an advanced Islamic art found all over the world. The National Center for Calligraphy was established in 1994, and it gives a great push to Arabic calligraphy. As trainers, we try to correct the ideas regarding Arabic calligraphy and use them in all fields. The modern calligrapher must be trained in all modern software related to Arabic calligraphy. Arabic calligraphy is also used in decorating clothes.”

 (SOUNDBITE) Walid – Participant:

“I came with my son to learn Arabic calligraphy. It is our identity, but unfortunately we do not know it well. Today we saw its tools and how to prepare it to be like a pen, and then we learned how to use it with ink.”
