Storyline

The Tunisian girl, Hala Boubaker, started a beekeeping project aiming to extract bee venom, used in the manufacture of alternative medicines and cosmetic products.

She, along with her fiancé, came up with a device that helps her achieve her purpose.

Hala is still attending her university despite several obstacles, and at the same time, she works on her project, through which she wants to obtain eight different products from the bees she keeps.

“My story with bees started as a challenge. I challenged myself in this field because I have an allergy. I am interested in bee venom. I am determined to continue studying in this field, especially since it is used in medicines and cosmetics. I and my fiancé made a small device.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Hala Boubaker – Biology Student and Beekeeping Trainer:

“Our device is a small device for extracting bee venom, I place it in the middle of the bee’s hive at night till morning, and then I can extract pure bee venom. Usually, the bee dies when it stings, but with this device, we won’t be exposed to bee stings, just leave the device and in the morning take it and go.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Hala Boubaker – Biology Student and Beekeeping Trainer:

“The Nabeul conference was my first step in this field. They honored me among the three greatest beekeepers in the world. I was only 22 years old. From there, I started studying bees, and I finished my studies in two years and earned my degree. I still have 3 and a half years ahead so that I can specialize in bee venom and manufacture cosmetics from it.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Hala Boubaker – Biology Student and Beekeeping Trainer:

“People ask me if there is a profit from the bees. Yes, there is if you know how to work with them and produce 8 products. Honey alone is not profitable especially when there is no rain like last year, but if you extract bee venom, royal jelly, pollen, propolis, honeycombs, gomogenat, and honey, you will earn a lot. Each of these products has a specific time to extract, whether in the spring, fall, or winter.  I do not touch my bees, and there is a certain feeding at a certain time. Sometimes the consumer says feeding them is cheating, but this is not true. If the bees aren’t fed in December, the queen sleeps, and if the queen sleeps, there will be no eggs, and therefore there will be no swarm of bees in the spring, and then there will be no honey. It’s all connected, it’s the winter’s work that makes in the spring you say you have honey.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Hala Boubaker – Biology Student and Beekeeping Trainer:

“Dealing with a bee is difficult at first, especially if you had no idea about it. I did not start working until I studied for a year. It is not enough to buy a beehive and start working without being aware and understanding what you do.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Hala Boubaker – Biology Student and Beekeeping Trainer:

“I took a loan from the Development Association at the beginning, and I bought eight hives. I succeeded in the project and they become 80. I rented a car, and move with them every two months. It is a very difficult task, especially for a girl as moving is done at night, my family at first did not accept the idea, but then I proved myself in this field, and I am proud of what I do. My family is also proud of me.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Hala Boubaker – Biology Student and Beekeeping Trainer:

“Once my bees died. I lost about 35 million, but I did not stop. If I stopped, no one would pay attention to me. People pay attention to you when you succeed. This is my dream, love, work, and study. The more I learned, the more I loved it”
