Storyline

The plastic artist Yousuf Al-Hindi from Al-Shati refugee camp in Gaza utilizes his hobby of plastic art and plaster casting to work in his small workshop on the terrace of his house.

He uses simple tools to make different sculptures and many artistic and heritage paintings such as for Jerusalem, ancient Palestinian cities, national figures, and symbols.

The plastic artist, Yousuf Al-Hindi, said that he works to highlight and defend the Palestinian cause, pointing out that there is an increased demand for his pieces that are used as souvenirs and gifts, which are popular among citizens.

The hobby of Al-Hindi is his main source of income; he sells his pieces and paintings through social media platforms.

He wishes that his paintings and sculptures cross the siege and the borders to reach outside Gaza.

“I work with plaster casting, the material is common for other uses, but I turned it into artistic pieces used as souvenirs to express our goals of consolidating national values. When we talk about the sculpting tools in the workshop, they are all simple, I have no professional tools for sculpting but I use tools like toothbrushes and many others. Iron wires may be involved in my work. The work begins with several stages, the stage of casting the plaster to design any artwork.”

“First I work on the ground, I implement the idea and design on plasterboard, and then the process of sculpting and coloring the piece in the first and second layer. The main goal of my work is that we are Palestinians, refugees, and living in a camp, I am an artist carrying a message. The idea was that all of our products carry the symbol of the Palestinian cause. We are interested in highlighting the city of Jerusalem because it is the main matter for us, also in highlighting the poets who sang for Palestine. I received a lot of opportunities to export my work abroad, but unfortunately, the occupation prevented the pieces from leaving Gaza.”
