Storyline:

Most of the people of the neighborhoods near Al-Sina’a Prison in Ghweran neighborhood, southern Hasaka, fled after ISIS attacked the prison, to stay in the Musab bin Omair mosque, in the Tel Hajar neighborhood in the city center.

The residents say that the mass escape that the city witnessed for ISIS members from prison, sparked panic among people, forcing them to evacuate their homes to the safer northern areas. They added that the fleeing ISIS members in the area had massacred several civilians, destroying homes.

The displaced people suffer from poor living conditions in this mosque, which shelters them where they lack the necessities of daily life, as they are left carrying nothing with them. They also suffer from bad health conditions due to the chilly weather, and the place has become overcrowded with people that cannot accommodate all of these people.

“Two days ago, 12 people attacked us, they roamed among neighborhoods, they blew up a house, they kill whoever resist them, they break into the house and explode it,  so we had to evacuate, we did taking nothing with us. They are with long beards wearing orange clothes, they killed a lot of people. I don’t know where my family is, my children and husband are missing, we are scattered everywhere, I came here in the morning, I was sleeping on the street.”

“Our houses were destroyed, if we go there we will find empty and destroyed houses, we don’t know anything about Ghweran neighborhood, my husband is here but I don’t know where is he, all the families are scattered. The family book is lost in the house along with my identity, we didn’t bring anything with us, the Kurds forced us to leave our homes because of the clash and we left.”

• (SOUNDBITE) Hassan Awad Al-Abed – Displaced from Ghweran neighborhood:

“ISIS members attacked us. They broke into our homes, and we were defeated and left to Al-Abed town because we thought it is safer, but they followed us there as well. ISIS divided the people, look at the people all are miserable, they left their lives, we don’t get rid of ISIS, now or later. Hopefully, we do anyhow. They killed a man and two young children with him, they attacked him and killed him, while I was running there was a woman running in front of me and she was hit in her shoulder by a bullet.”

• (SOUNDBITE) Um, Ibrahim – Displaced from Ghweran neighborhood:

“We were afraid of their attack so we fled and got trapped; we can no longer go anywhere. This is unjust; we are human beings, they must not attack us. What do they think about us, we aren’t monsters so they attack us? We are human beings; we want to get rid of them in any way. why are all these things? People are stuck and scattered? what do they want I cant understand”
