The Clean Energy Forum was kicked off in Baghdad, with the participation of the Ministries of Oil, Electricity and Environment, and several national and global companies operating in Iraq, including South Gas and Basra Gas; to support initiatives towards the gradual transition from traditional energy to clean and renewable energy and to get acquainted about the latest practical experiences and applications of the developed countries.

This step builds on contracts and agreements signed by the Ministries of Oil and Electricity and the National Investment Authority with international companies such as the UAE company Masdar, Siemens of Germany, and Total of France to generate renewable energy and stop burning gas and carbon emissions, in addition to a project to generate 1 gigawatt of electricity by solar energy in southern Iraq.

The Iraqi Minister of Environment welcomed the country’s move towards clean energy, mentioning the classification of Iraq as one of the countries most affected by climate change.

“The Ministry has taken the significant initiative. There was an agreement with international companies, such as Total, to establish the first and biggest project in Iraq, which is one gigawatt of solar energy investment in southern Iraq. This was followed by an agreement with the Masdar company of UAE, and an agreement with a Norwegian company. We have progressed conversations with Siemens Energy, which delivered a document on clean and renewable energy in Iraq, it is important to agree with the company to invest in hydrogen, which is one of the most important sources of clean energy now and in the future.”

“Alternative energy is no longer something to look at, it is basic. we, as Siemens in Iraq can produce sustainable fuels using renewable energy, since the world used to dig down for a hundred years to extract oil, now we can’t take the energy from above the ground to produce renewable energy solar energy.”

“It is our responsibility to stay up with global trends. We consider and plan for long-term steps when this growth of renewable energy is accompanied by a shortage of demand for fossil fuels, therefore we push to have new energies and projects and reduce emissions carbon dioxide from Iraqi oil.”
