Syria: Inaugurating the First School for Visually Impaired Children in Raqqa
Raqqa- Syria 01/12/2020
Raqqa Civilian Council inaugurated its first center for rehabilitating deaf and visually impaired children dubbed “Bashir Al Hwaidy center”. The center teaches 135 thousand children on the Braille system of writing used by and for blind persons (Alphabetic writing system) as well as on sign language. The center mainly works on honing three skills: reading, writing, and pronouncing to children who underwent cochlear implant. In Raqqa, there are more than 360 children with hearing and visual impairments, only part of which attend the center, due to the absence of transportation and nonavailability of classrooms.
