In the presence of the President of the Republic of Tunisia Beji Caid Essebsi, the late Leader Habib Bourguiba statue was inaugurated. Essebsi stressed out the symbolic importance of restoringthe statue of Bourguiba, for the sacrifices he made for Tunisia and his effective role in his country through keeping up with developed countries. He also considered Bourguiba a symbol of freedom, independence and the new state.
Bourguiba’s granddaughter Mariam explained that returning the statue has two symbols which are commemorating a certain period in the country’s history and the other one is the Victory day.
Tunisian opinions varied about that as some of them considered that all the credit goes to him for what Tunisia have reached from stability, while others see that this is not the time to glorify.
It is noteworthy that the former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali gave an order in November 11, 1987 to remove the monument and replace it with the giant clock.
