Tunisia – Torture Prevention Authority holds press conference on prison reality

The Torture Prevention authority in Tunis held a press conference on the non-compliance of Tunisia with international conventions that preserve the dignity of individuals in prisons and shelters, through the authority’s monitoring of a number of abuses, particularly in conditions of detention, through the overcrowding and poor infrastructure that the prisons are witnessing, in addition to the continuing practices of torture which the Commission considered to be individual override rather than a State policy, it should be noted that the work of the Authority also covers the conditions of detention and accommodation of individuals with disabilities, sexual minorities, foreigners, women and the elderly, since these groups are the most vulnerable to torture and abuse physically, morally, and psychologically in the absence of compliance with laws and legislation that preserve the dignity of individuals in prisons and shelters, the torture prevention committee will also provide legal drafts to the Parliament in order to ensure human dignity in prison and reduce violations against individuals.
