Somalia – Al Shabaab leader defects, analysts say the government should take advantage of growing defections

Al Shabaab’s field commander “Sharmarki Abdel Nasser Ahmio” has defected and surrendered to government forces in Kismayo, the administrative capital of Jubaland, in southern Somalia, “Sharmarki”, who has been in Al Shabaab’s ranks for almost nine years, confirmed in a press release that he has split from the movement, he also expressed his willingness to engage in the community and cooperate with the Somali government, analysts believe that Somali security and intelligence services should take advantage of the increasing defections of Al Shabaab fighters and leaders to identify the vulnerabilities of the movement in order to be able to fight it.
