Iraq – Analysts: influential political blocs manage and protect oil smuggling networks

The issue of smuggling oil internally and externally is a question that seeks an answer for every Iraqi citizen since 2003, as oil is an important part of the Iraqi economy. Political and economic analysts point out that oil smuggling started with factions, parties and clans controlling it, while it got even worse after ISIS controlled vast areas of the country and sold the barrel for 20 dollars while it was worth 120 dollars at the time. They added that internal smuggling is not a as big of a problem as smuggling across the border to neighboring countries in light of the inability of successive governments to fight the smuggling networks run and protected by influential political blocs in the country.
