The name of the Pope’s Mount in East Jerusalem dates back to when the Vatican granted part of the land to the Bedouin inhabitants of the mountain. It was a gift from King Hussein to His Holiness Pope Paul VI when he visited the Palestinian territories in 1964. Today, about 300 Jahalin Bedouins live there, but the Israeli government is seeking to demolish and confiscate the mountainous lands to expand the settlement community known as Ma’aleh Adumim.
