Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, held talks today Thursday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Amman, on the Syrian crisis, especially the situation in southern Syria.

Safadi said during a joint press conference with Lavrov that they focused on the potential risks in the event of instability in southern Syria, “which deepens the suffering of our brothers and threatens our national nation.”

“We discussed the steps required to ward off this threat and provide the necessary stability requirements in southern Syria,” Safadi added.

“The Russian presence in southern Syria contributes to stability in these circumstances, as a political solution to the crisis remains an unfulfilled goal.”

He stressed that the Palestinian issue is “the first and main issue,” referring to the Jordanian-Russian agreement that “there is no alternative to the two-state solution as a means to resolve the conflict and achieve comprehensive peace.”

The Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister warned against “the Israeli escalation in the occupied Palestinian territories, and against the continuation of measures that support the occupation and undermine the chances of achieving peace.”

For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov indicated, in press statements, to the continuation of cooperation with Jordan in the fields of agriculture, medicine and education, stressing Russia’s welcome to the results of the Arab summit in Algeria.

He affirmed Russia’s support for all previous international commitments in support of international resolutions.

“We indicated a special need for various international platforms, including the Astana platform, and we witnessed Jordanian participation as an observer,” Lavrov said.
