Storyline:

Hundreds of Iraqi demonstrators Saturday flocked to Tahrir Square in Baghdad to commemorate the third anniversary of the Tishreen revolution, amid unprecedented security measures as many bridges and main roads leading to the demonstration squares and the Green Zone were closed. Demonstrators raised Iraqi flags and banners calling for the departure of the political authority and the accountability of the corrupt and the killers of the demonstrators.

For his part, the spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces said that the security plan for securing demonstrations in Tahrir Square is renewed according to the developments in the security situation. He added that there are instructions to the security forces to prevent the use of weapons against demonstrators, calling on protesters not to cause chaos during the demonstrations.

Shot list:

  • Soundbite (Sarmad Najib – one of the demonstrators):

“I was hit in the morning on my hands. No ambulance arrived. There is nothing to treat ourselves with, not even wound dressings.”

  • Soundbite (Ayser Hassan – one of the demonstrators):

“We don’t have a weapon or anything. We take the wounded to the bridge, but they die in our hands. We don’t have any weapons, what is our fault, they don’t enter us from the streets”

  • Soundbite (Hussein Al-Ali – one of the demonstrators):

“We have come to commemorate the Ashura revolution of this corrupt political system that destroyed our country. Currently, there is no reconstruction and no army. Iran is hitting us with missiles and we give it money while our people are hungry. This is not permissible. Our people are oppressed. We came here on foot from Salman Pak.”
