Storyline:

Several artists in Gaza painted a mural in commemoration of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh who lost her life yesterday while covering events in Jenin camp. Artists used their brushes and colors to express condemnation towards those who target journalists on duty. Artists demand the International Community to take responsibility in protecting journalists everywhere, ensuring their rights according to international laws and enabling them to practice journalism freely. The mural is a painting of Shireen Abu Akleh next to a press helmet along with a painting of her colleague looking shocked unable to grasp the situation during the first moments after Shireen’s killing. The backdrop of the mural is Shireen’s beloved  Jerusalem, where she covered events daily.

Shotlist:

Soundbite (Mohammad Al-Halabi – Activist):

“The mural is of Shireen Abu Akleh with Jerusalem as the backdrop in commemoration of her

Work in covering Al-Aqsa Mosque and defending Palestine. The painting portrays the way in which Shireen Abu Akleh was killed. We ask the world and human rights institutions to stand against this occupation that suppresses freedom and rights on a daily basis, ignoring all international laws and targeting journalists, youth institutes and media institutions. We demand direct litigation to international organizations and human rights institutions.

Soundbite (Asmaa Abu Hayya – Visual artist

“We painted Shireen Abu Akleh who was killed by the occupation, may she rest in peace. We

painted the mural in commemoration of this journalist who covered the events in West Bank and Jerusalem.”

Soundbite (Hiba Akeelah – Al-Jazeera correspondent in Gaza):

“The tragic killing of colleague Shireen Abu Akleh was a shock to all, it is still difficult coming to

terms with what happened. The Israeli occupation does not have any respect for journalists, it does not uphold international laws in relation to the protection of journalists and their rights. Shireen’s death should convey a message to all international entities in politics, journalism and human rights who need to put pressure on Israel and force it to abide by international laws, provide protection for journalists in Palestine and stop its assaults.
