Storyline:
People of Gaza begin preparing the “Fesikh”, which is fermented, salted, and dried fish, as it is their tradition to have it on breakfast on the first day of Eid, immediately after Eid prayers.
The factory, located in the heart of Gaza prepares and supplies quantities of Fesikh to sell in the markets on the first day of Eid, hiring more workers, which provides job opportunities for some people in light of the deteriorating living conditions as a result of the siege imposed for years on the strip.
Shot list:
- (SOUNDBITE) Alaa Al-Rahhal – Owner of the fish factory:
“After 30 days of fasting, people of Gaza like to have a salty meal on breakfast on Eid. We prepare several recipes of Fesikh which is a tradition for people. We face challenges, the most important of which are frequent power outage, and we have to operate generators. Also fish is expensive when we buy it from the merchants, especially after the increase in taxes and the war in Ukraine.”
- (SOUNDBITE) Alaa Al-Rahhal – Owner of the fish factory:
“Every house in Gaza has Fesikh on breakfast. It is healthy and nutritious. We also prepared a recipe for blood pressure patients so they can have it. Regarding the economic situation, there are no job opportunities in the Strip.”
- (SOUNDBITE) Abdul Aziz Abdul Qadir – Factory worker:
“I have been working in the factory for 3 years. It is my only source of income. Most the young people are unemployed but the month of Ramadan for us is a season in which we get work. Fisikh on eid is necessary like the sweets in Ramadan. We get fish, chop it, wash it, dry it and cook it in the oven.”
