She supports her family after the death of her husband, working with her sons, amid the difficult economic conditions in Gaza in general.

  • (SOUNDBITE) Um, Iyad Salha – Owner of Qatayef stall:

“I make Qatayef during Ramadan only. This work is my only source of income. I have been working in this profession for 25 years. I started with my husband and children when they were young. After my husband died in 2014, I continued to sell Qatayef until this moment. The conditions changed over time. Previously, the price of Qatayef was fixed, at five shekels per kilo and now it is six shekels per kilo. Life has become expensive and difficult. Qatayef is made of flour, semolina, and yeast.”

  • (SOUNDBITE) Um, Iyad Salha – Owner of Qatayef stall:

“The special Qatayef is known by the way it dries and absorbs the syrup and also by its distinctive color. There are many Qatayef sellers in the market, but most people come to buy from us. I make Qatayef only in Ramadan, it does not suffice for me throughout the year, but it helps me pay off debts. The most prominent difficulties we meet are the high prices. Most of the products we buy have nearly doubled their price.”
