Storyline

Food kitchens and other places that supply food to poor families in need are increasing in Gaza due to the difficult living conditions of the citizens. For this reason, several young men volunteered and started their own food kitchen for preparing and serving popular traditional food. The poor and needy line up out front before Maghreb prayer waiting to receive their Iftar meal form the food kitchen. The volunteers who started this initiative said that they serve over 400 meals a day. They said this effort is for alleviating the suffering of people in Gaza.

  • Soundbite (Khidhir Farajallah – Food kitchen staff):

“People are in need of places like this that alleviate the difficult conditions they are living. It was a good turnout, the food is all gone. The economy is in bad shape, otherwise people would not come here for food.”

  • Soundbite (Mohammed Farajallah – Food kitchen staff):

“The food kitchen was self-funded because we as Palestinians wanted to contribute in alleviating the suffering of these people. We started with a small amount of food but the increased turnout made us increase the amount of food to cover the numbers We operate according to a daily meal schedule. We prepare a lot of traditional food. Out target group is those who can not cook at home. The food kitchen provides for 400 people.”

  • Soundbite (Mohammed Farajallah – Food kitchen staff):

“We start serving at five. Citizens start coming at four. We are self-funded with the help of some patrons. We are having difficulties raising money to be able to continue serving the citizens. We hope to serve meat and fish everyday but we our financially unable to. Prices have increased due to the latest Israeli war on Gaza and we have been greatly affected because of it.”
