Storyline

The month of Ramadan is about to start in Turkey amid difficult economic conditions experienced by the Turkish people in general and the Arab residents in particular.

Opinions of residents varied about the significant rise in the prices of commodities and raw materials.

These opinions included; the depreciation of the Turkish Lira against the dollar, and the war in Ukraine which interrupted the import of some materials, especially flour and oil.

Some shop owners pointed out that the demand for purchases this season is poor compared to last Ramadan.

“The prices this year are higher than last year, due to the weak Turkish currency. Last year, the atmosphere of Ramadan was more joyful despite the spread of Covid and the lockdown.”

(SOUNDBITE) Ahmad – Syrian citizen residing in Turkey:

“The prices are very high this month. Last year in Ramadan, everything was cheaper. I guess the increase in the dollar’s value is the main reason in the first place, in addition to the war in Ukraine, which caused the import of flour and oil to stop.”

(SOUNDBITE) Bilal – Syrian citizen residing in Turkey:

“Everything is expensive this year. The prices change every month.”

“The prices have increased and in return, wages have increased too”.
