Storyline:

Tunisians commemorated Palestinian Land Day by holding several events including a Palestinian heritage exhibition that was hosted by The Higher Institute for Childhood Tires. The commemoration involved celebrations and a theater performance about the Palestinian cause. Many participants were highly engaged at the event considering Land Day to be a symbol of the Palestinian resistance, as well as a way to preserve Palestinian heritage against those who attempt to distort or take it.

Shotlist:

Soundbite (Kamal Al-Hussainy – Executive Director of The Lady of The Earth Foundation):

“Land Day is a day of pride that 46 years ago and has become another compass for resistance. Our message to the occupation is we remain in resistance refusing to give up our land until we are six feet under it. We will never sell out, give up or give in because this message is our truth and reality. Palestinian Land Day was a day of uprising in the entirety of 48 borders including the Triangle, Arraba and Dayr Hanna. These three neighboring areas declared through their uprising that they refuse to give up this land, which paved the way for the First Intifada in 1947.”

Soundbite (Mohammad Aadu – Member of The Palestinian Heritage Center):

“During the past years, it was evident to us how Israelis wanted to distort Palestinian heritage and take it for their own benefit. Palestinian heritage is important and showing it to the world, especially here in Tunisia is vital for us because it lets people know the Palestinian identity. This event is important for us because it is an opportunity to ensure that people remember that Palestinians and Palestine possess ancient heritage that must be protected from Israelis who attempt to take it and claim it as their own.”

Soundbite (Nawal Ghasham – Tunisian artist):

“Land Day started since childhood as we learned from our parents. The relationship between Tunisia and Palestine is a long-standing one that we teach our children to keep going. This important day is for me and all the generations before and after me, a day on which we declare to the world that Palestinian land is Arab land and we will keep holding on to it regardless of the consequences. We are always carrying Palestine in our hearts and the Palestinian cause is the foremost for all Arabs. I started singing about Palestine since the beginning of the journey and the struggles never stopped. I speak of Palestine through my voice, words, poetry, melody and in every other way possible.”

Soundbite (Nidal – Syrian residing in Tunisia and member of Saif Al-Sham Band that played at the event):

“This day is for all Palestinians to celebrate their land and the land of their ancestors. Palestine belongs to us and this cause matters to us and the entire Middle East. We are happy to be here today together. We are hoping for the great joy of having Jerusalem so we can gather and celebrate.”
