Storyline
After the Iraqi parliament finally set next Wednesday as the date for the presidential elections, Iraqis are awaiting the results with anticipation. The early Iraqi parliamentary elections took place more than five months ago, on October 10, 2021, to form a new government in response to the demands of the 2019 protests. Prior to the session, Iraqi political parties and blocs, regardless of their orientations, are seeking solutions to form the required quorum and prevent the session from failing. Some members of the bloc stressed the need to reach a consensus on the election of the President of the Republic and the formation of the government in order to avoid postponing the session, which may lead to the dissolution of the House of Representatives and its re-election.

- Soundbite (Muhammad Taqi al-Amerli – Member of Parliament):
“In the previous session, there were also complications, and the crisis did not resolve at that time except with a consensus among all the existing parties. Parliaments should agree, and reach a consensus. Our main goal is to preserve the unity of the Shiite house, the unity of Iraq. So they have to agree to form the government without any complications.”
- Soundbite (Suzan Mansour – Member of Parliament):
“Wednesday’s session will determine everything. We hope that there will be no problems. We have about 24 hours before this session. We hope that the political parties will agree with each other and that they will give up even a small part of their requirements. This early elections was based on the demonstrations that took place in October. We only seek is to serve the Iraqi citizen.
