Storyline
The Iraqi young man, Zaid Jassim, was able to generate renewable energy to supply his home and overcome the issue of frequent power outages in Basra, southern Iraq.
He designed a solar system consisting of small cells of about 100 to 200 watts and batteries up to a volume of three kilowatts, placing it on the roof of his house.
Jassim pointed out that the solar system has made him self-sufficient that he stopped using fuel-powered generators, calling on Iraqis to use renewable energy because of its positive impact on the economy and environment.
The Assistant Governor of Basra, Moeen Al-Hassan, said that Iraq and Basra, in particular, tend to adopt renewable energy in the future through holding conferences and receiving proposals to develop the alternative energy sector.
Basra Governorate plans to launch three stations with a total capacity of 1,000 megawatts to complete solar energy projects.

- (SOUNDBITE) Zaid Jassim – Innovator of renewable energy:
“Solar energy is good and clean energy. I generate my energy and don’t need national electricity. At night, I use the tubular batteries, I have been using them for about 3 years. The solar energy systems should run within a specific system to be effective. I use the inverter, solar panels, and batteries. If the government helps us and prepares the system for us, people would no longer need national electricity. Why don’t you use on-grid and off-grid inverter devices which is available in the market and generate your own energy! Unfortunately, this system is not implemented in Iraq, although you can see it in some Arab countries such as Egypt. The solar system saves money, and provides additional energy.”
- (SOUNDBITE) Moin al-Hassan – Assistant Governor of Basra:
“The majority of countries in the world are interested in clean energy; including Iraq. We attend conferences held in or outside Basra about clean energy. The local government in Basra supports all proposals to develop the clean energy sector to rely on clean energy in the future.”
