Storyline

Raghda Hamida, from Gaza, turned her hobby of embroidering on wood into a source of income, although she holds two university degrees in engineering and accounting, however, she was unable to find a job due to the lack of jobs opportunities in the Strip.

Raghda, who believes that embroidery is a Palestinian heritage, works from home and makes medals, accessory boxes, sweet boxes, mirror frames, serving trays, in addition to Palestinian symbols such as the map of Palestine and the right to return key.

She promotes her products on social media, through which she gets orders even from outside the country, but the conditions of the siege make it difficult to deliver the orders.

Raghda uses simple tools such as needles, threads, and nails, but she is looking forward to obtaining machines and devices that will save her effort. She also aspires to participate in foreign exhibitions.

(SOUNDBITE) Raghda Hamida- Artist in embroidery on wood:

“I like drawing and crafts. I hold degrees in engineering and accounting. The project isn’t related to my degree. I turned my hobby into a source of income due to the lack of job opportunities. I start implementing my idea, present it to people and earn from that. Embroidery is a heritage for us, and I want every home to have my products whether medals, accessory boxes, sweet boxes, frames for the mirror, serving trays, and many other pieces. I love to integrate our heritage with modernity.”

(SOUNDBITE) Raghda Hamida- Artist in embroidery on wood:

“I use simple tools, such as needles, silk threads, hammers, and nails. I need machines and devices but due to the siege imposed on Gaza, I had to work with very simple tools. I promote my products through social media. Some customers contact me from outside the country, but I can’t deliver the products to them due to the closure of the crossings. I would like everyone to acquire these pieces, especially traditional symbols such as the map of Palestine and the key of right to return.”
