Storyline
Marking International Women’s Day, Palestinian women organized a sit-in outside the Red Cross headquarters in Gaza, calling on the world and the international community to take action to help end the suffering of Palestinian female prisoners in Israeli jails.
They also demanded the enactment of a law that preserves women’s rights and protects them from domestic violence and abuse. In addition, they requested the government in Gaza and the West Bank to end the Palestinian division because of its negative impact on society and the Palestinian cause.
The protesters said that the Palestinian woman sacrificed a lot and suffered from the scourge of occupation, siege, division, and violence.

(SOUNDBITE) Areej Al-Ashkar – Palestinian Federation of Women’s Action Committees:
“Palestine’s women wish women of the world a happy women’s day. We struggle for protecting women’s rights. We demand a law to protect women from domestic violence, and prosecute criminals who commit acts of violence against Palestinian women. These are our main demands on Women’s Day.”
(SOUNDBITE) Arabiya Abu Jayab – Palestinian Federation of Women’s Action Committees:
“Happy Women’s Day to Palestinian and Arab women. We organized our sit-in to support Palestinian female prisoners and to fight for their release from Israeli jails. We ask the international community for justice. The entire Arab world should support our cause. We need laws ensuring justice for women.”
