Storyline

The summer season in Thailand runs from February through May, as the weather tends to be warm this time of the year. Mammals, especially dogs and cats, are susceptible to rabies. As a result, many people and animals die from highly infectious diseases. In response to the authorities have launched an initiative to vaccinate pets and animals across the country. The initiative is aimed at stemming the spread of diseases such as rabies to reduce the problem of rabies-associated epidemic and death of pets and people. Rabies is often rampant around this time of the year, Manat Dee, the president of Khlong Niyom Yatra Sub-District Administrative Organization, said, adding that pets would be prone to symptoms. He said that it was evident that in Khlong Niyom Yatra Sub-District, there are some 1,000 dogs and cats in total.

(Soundbite) Mr. Manat Dee, the president of Khlong Niyom Yatra Sub-District Administrative Organization:

“The Khlong Niyom Yatra Sub-District Administrative Organization has recognized the issue of rabies. Therefore, a memo was made with the Bang Bo District Livestock Office to train community leaders and government officials in the district on how to campaign for rabies vaccination in the villages. This is for the safety of the people ahead of the summer. Rabies is often rampant around this time of the year, as dogs would be prone to symptoms. We run a campaign every year. From the survey area, it was found that in Khlong Niyom Yatra Sub-District, there are 1,012 dogs and cats in total.”

(Soundbite) Mr. Satit Kacharoen, an official at the Livestock, Bang Bo District:

“Before 2017, there was a rabies epidemic; there were more than 100 deaths that spurred us to start the project we are doing here. The name of the project is ‘animals free from rabies, people are safe.’ From now on, we will continue the project to prevent events that had happened in the past.”

(Soundbite) Mr. Thanapon Tohunpetch, a dog owner:

“Last year, the dog was vaccinated at the clinic. This year, there is a free vaccination program. So we bring it here. It’s a very good project. This will be safe for the people because summer is at the door. If we can vaccinate dogs and cats on time, then we will be able to prevent the spread of rabies. I wish to have the project every year because people may not have access to vaccination. Most of them have dogs in almost every home. But sometimes, dogs and cats are not vaccinated. Thank you very much to the project owner for organizing a good project like this one because it has direct benefits to the general public.”
