Storyline

Noting the significant increase in cases of violence against women, with 80 percent of Gazan women experiencing violence, Faten Al Naqla launched an initiative to train women on Kung Fu to defend themselves. The 3-month training teaches trainees martial arts through certain practices and movements. Trainer Al Naqla said that she also aims to expand the scope of benefit by preparing trainers who are able to teach self-defense to others across the strip. The initiative was favorably received by Gazan women since it increases their confidence and equips them with the necessary skills to face any potential violence.

– Soundbite (Sameh Al Naqla – Kung Fu Instructor):

“We developed a women-centered program to teach them self-defense through Kung Fu art. Besides self-defense, kung fu helps improve health and blood circulation, as well as lose weight. The idea was brought up because women inside and outside Gaza are being bullied or harassed. We have two fighting systems; the Sanda which is a face-to-face self-defense, and fighting methods with imaginary arm sides.”

– Soundbite (Faten Al Naqla – Fitness & Kung Fu Instructor):

“Since about 80% of Gaza women experience violence, we came up with the idea of training to enable them to stand up for themselves. The idea was well-received, with many women interested in joining the program. We are planning to train players, prepare coaches, and form a women’s jury.”

– Soundbite (Menna Allah Aldremly – a trainee):

“I joined the training to learn martial arts to be able to defend myself, especially in light of the increasing cases of violence against women. Every woman should be eager to learn these arts in order to deal with any sudden mishap that she may encounter.”
