Storyline

The Joint Refugee Committee organized a sit-in near the headquarter of The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to rally against the agency’s failure to comply with its commitments toward refugees, demanding donor countries to support the agency. The agency’s decision to scale back its humanitarian and food aid along with its health services had a chilling effect on citizens. People in Gaza are suffering from poor living conditions due to the Israeli blockade, closure of border crossings, a soaring unemployment rate that hit a new percentage of 50%.

In Gaza, about 70% of the population are refugees. Those who receive aid from UNRWA are indeed 85%. We call upon the international community and the European Union to support the agency for the sake of the people and for paving the way for people to go back to their homeland, from which they were displaced in 1984.

We demand scaling up aid and we call upon the European Union to support the agency

-SOUNDBITE ( Abu Hussein Al-Sheikh – a refugee citizen)

This agency was founded to provide aid for the Palestinian nation. Today, a lot of health services and food aid were scaled back. Most people depend solely on such an aid in their daily lives. Therefore, if the agency didn’t provide more aid, we would starve to death, and we won’t allow this to happen.
