The competition aims to initiate motivation towards reading, turn it into a habit, and encourage the readers.

Various shots from the press conference to announce the launch of the second edition of the competition

(SOUNDBITE) Fouad Al-Khateeb – Inspector General of the Ministry of Education and member of the National Committee for the competition:

“The first edition had many strengths, due to the tens of thousands of participants at the local and regional levels, it was concluded with 1042 participants at the national level from all segments which was the strength. Second, the competition included all age groups, some participants were over the age of 70, and others were young, and there were all segments and educational levels. Prisoners also participated, we attended with them, their preparations and successes were a very pleasant surprise, this is an opportunity to encourage reading, not only in the academic study, but also we want to encourage everyone to read and to increase their love for books. The goal is not the competition in itself, nor the prize, but rather it is just to motivate reading which is our goal.”

(SOUNDBITE) Mansour Al-Shtawi – Member of the Scientific Committee of the competition:

“The participation is available to every subscriber in a public library. They obtain the subscription passports, which is a notebook for the participants to write down their summaries. They will organize their readings, and then will be called to conduct meetings, exams, or tests, regarding the competition, till the results of the local stages. After that, the participant will be nominated to the regional stage, and those who succeed will pass to the finale. This is all to encourage readers to be more interested in reading, not to be afraid from the evaluation, because the long term goal is to restore people’s interest in books in their daily and social lives.”
