Storyline:

Views of the Iraqis diverged regarding the winner President of the Republic after the parliament announced twenty-five candidates for this position, where differences occurred among the political parties about who will form the government.

The Sadrist bloc, the Sunni component, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party have agreed on Hoshyar Zebari as a presidential candidate and to be elected in the upcoming parliament session on February 7th.

This sparked disagreement between the Shiite and Kurdish blocs as the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan stuck to Barham Salih. The PUK dominated this position during the formation of successive governments after 2003.

“Before the formation of any government, we witness disputes between the parties over choosing the Prime Minister, the President of the Republic, or the Speaker of Parliament. In the past few days, the issue of the Speaker of the Parliament has been resolved. Disagreements among Shiite have negatively affected the Kurdish party because of the National Union Party, which tends to choose Barham Salih, unlike the Kurdistan Democratic Party, which supports Hoshyar Zebari, who agrees with the orientations of the Sunni and the Kurdish component.”

(SOUNDBITE) Haider Nabil – Media Person:

“The process of electing the president seems smooth, but the political process taught us that there is nothing certain. Any change is possible to occur in the coming hours. The political process always surprises us, the political class, the political observer, and the citizens. Mr. Al-Halbousi and the Sunni forces and the Kurdish forces met today. Some parties who find it an attempt to bring the views of the Shiite closer, as well as the selection of the President, the most prominent candidate so far, is Hoshyar Zebari, but as I said, the political process always surprises us. Any change in the political process may happen in the coming hours, which would change the choice of the President.”

(SOUNDBITE) Abdullah Al-Kinani – Political Analyst:

“The gap has become large between the Shiite blocs, and I expect the Sadrist bloc to form the government joined by many alliances in the parliament. We misunderstand the constitution. The alliances start after the first meeting of parliament and this is a mistake. The constitution says the winning bloc outside the parliament dome is responsible for forming the government before it takes the constitutional oath and enters parliament.”
