Penjwen district in Iraq’s Kurdistan experienced the greatest drop in temperatures, reaching -25C, while the people of the region said that it exceeded -32C at night.

The chilly weather had an impact on people’s life due to a scarcity of fuel and food resulting from the closures of roads and the accumulation of snow.

Iraq’s northern regions haven’t seen such low temperatures for decades, thus people called the Penjwen area; Moscow of the east due to the severe cold on the Asian continent.

“The cold this year is frightening, it was officially announced that the temperature has reached -27C but I think it reached -30C, which is concerning. The government gave us 180 liters of Kerosene this year and it was not enough for us. food also disappeared from the markets of  Penjwen because of the blocked roads. The government should have provided us with support and services and brought us food from the monthly ration, which was delayed.”
