Mongolia – Beaver to give birth to quintuplets at Beaver Acclimation and Breeding Center
It is rare for a single beaver to give birth to quintuplets in Mongolia, yet the first time in Beaver Breeding Center at the Environmental Department of the Capital City, and the weight and growth of the newborn kits have been normal. The beaver, known as the “ecosystem engineer”, maintains the ecological balance of its habitat by increasing water levels of the river and is of great significance to promote biodiversity. Raising beavers started in 2012 and a total of 57 beavers have been re-introduced in the headstream of Tuul River and its affluent – Zaan and Terelj rivers to reduce the degradation of the Toll River ecosystem and restore the river basin environmental conditions.
