Iraq – The Pope meets the Qaraqosh Christians, a church destroyed by ISIS
Pope Francis has reached the Great Church of Al-Tahira, which was revived for the occasion of his visit to Qaraqosh, the Christian town, northern Iraq, and was destroyed by ISIS in 2014. His delegation was welcomed by the Christians of the town who held palm fronds and wore traditional clothes, and who returned to their town after three years of displacement. During the visit, the Pope offered the evangelism prayer in the church and encouraged the Christians of Iraq who have been suffering for so long to forgive the wrong carried out against them by the extremists, and to work hard in reconstructing the country following years of war and sectarian disputes.
