Somalia – Concerns over the postponement of the National Human Rights Commission establishment

The Independent Expert on the Situation of Human Rights in Somalia, Bahame Tom Nyanduga, has expressed his concern over postponing the establishment of the National Commission on Human Rights in Somalia and the failure of the Somali Parliament to ratify the Sexual Offenses Act. Bahame called on the Somali government to expedite passage of these laws to promote the protection of human rights In Somalia. He pointed out at a press conference held in the capital Mogadishu after a meeting of officials from the United Nations offices and the African Union office in Somalia to assess the human rights situation in Somalia, the need for continued support by the international community of the Somali institutions in order to strengthen security and justice until the next election.
