Somalia – Drought causes new waves of displacement… And demands for humanitarian assistance
Aladala camp for displaced people – Mogadishu – Somalia 12/07/2019
The specter of famine continues to haunt Somali IDPs, where camps on the outskirts of Mogadishu are witnessing new waves of displacement due to the lack of rainfall during last April and May, which led to the drought of nearly 85% of the country’s farmland, while the former IDPs have not yet been returned to their areas of origin, the director of the Mogadishu-based Aladala Camp, Zahra Ali, called on UN bodies and officials to provide the necessary assistance to the provinces before the increase in displacement, as IDPs in the camp confirmed that they had not received any humanitarian assistance, adding that if no assistance is provided to the drought and dry regions, it will lead to a major exodus. It is worth mentioning that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has warned of the seriousness of the situation as a result of the country’s severe drought, which has led to the exposure of nearly 2.2 million people to starvation, especially between the coming July and September.
