Christians, Syriacs, Chaldeans and Assyrians are celebrating Akito day that marks the Assyrian New Year’s on April 1st in Qamishli in north Syria. This day marks the beginning of spring and prosperity and is considered a special astronomical occasion in the Assyrian culture. This day also represents the life cycle of nature as it is equinox. Various celebrations are held by religious and civil institutions, Mesopotamia National Council in Qamishli city, where the citizens celebrate Akito for three days. President of the Union of Muslim Scholars, Mohammad Mullah Rashid Gharzani stated that Muslims congratulating and celebrating with Christians on this occasion is highly symbolic as it indicates coexistence among the citizens in the region, as well as the importance of overcoming national, ethnic and religious differences.
