Tunisia – Conference on the equal inheritance bill

The National Coordination for the Defense of the Quran, the Constitution and Equitable Development held a press conference on the equal inheritance bill and serious misconduct in the religious affairs sector in Tunisia. The clergymen and human rights activists who attended confirmed that the equal inheritance bill is considered and encroachment of Islam, the constitution, and articles of the Personal Status Code. In addition to that, the bill could destabilize the Tunisian community.  Shehabuddin Talish, head of the National Coordination for the Defense of the Quran, the Constitution and Equitable Development explained that there is a committee belonging to the security services that monitors associations and Quran schools, some of which resort to using extremist and intimidating techniques with the children. He stressed that this is unacceptable and that the state should monitor religious institutions to prevent extremism and alienation.
