Iraq – Demands for intensifying awareness campaigns to reduce violence against women

In spite of the continuous efforts of the Iraqi government in Kurdistan Region and international organizations concerned with women’s rights to reduce violence against women that is for some a result of the social and financial problems the citizens suffer from in Kurdistan Region, the percentage of suicide cases has not decreased. The Directorate to Combat Violence Against Women in Sulaymaniyah has recorded a number of 28 cases of suicide and murder among women for the year 2018. This percentage is not different from the one recorded fro 2017, which was 29 cases. Women’s rights activists in Sulaymaniyah called for the need to intensify efforts, for the civil organizations and government to cooperate and to increase awareness programs to reduce violence against women. In addition to that, the need to provide job opportunities to enable women economically.
