Storyline:
Child labour has sharply risen in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden since the outbreak of war eight years ago amid severe economic conditions.
Yemen’s official reports said that the proportion of child workers under 15 years of age jumped to 80 percent in 2022 from 30 percent in 2015.
Yemen’s currency devaluation and losing jobs forced families to send their children to work indangerous jobs like mechanic workshops to earn a living.
A social specialist told A24 News Agency’s reporter that many children works in very hazardous jobs like selling tissue paper on the streets, welding and washing cars.
He urged parents to send their children to schools for education instead of working in dangerous jobs.

Soundbite (Ibrahim Mohamed – a welder):
“We are forced to work to earn a living. We are only two brothers working in dangerous jobs like welding and electrical work to support our family and this is our only source of money.”
Soundbite (Adel Sheikh – a social specialist):
“Since the outbreak of the war with the Houthi group in 2015, child labor has increased. Many children sell tissue paper on the streets, others work in welding and washing cars. Such jobs are very dangerous for children to work in. We urge parents to take care of their children’s education.”
