Storyline:
Yemeni media professionals in Taiz condemned, in a sit-in, the killing of the Palestinian journalist and Al-Jazeera correspondent Shiree Abu Aqleh while she wearing a jacket marked with the word “press” and a helmet.
Some participants demanded the enactment of deterrent international laws that criminalize targeting journalists and provide them with protection during their duties.
The participants also recalled many Yemeni journalists who were killed during their coverage of the war in the country, without the perpetrators being held accountable.
They pointed out that killing journalists intensified in various parts of the world, and they became vulnerable to multiple violations.

Soundbite (Maha Ali- Journalist):
“We are saddened by the death of Shireen Abu Aqleh, Al-Jazeera correspondent in Palestinian, who was assassinated by an Israeli bullet. Here we mention the tragic reality of the press in Yemen in general, and in Taiz in particular where we lost many voices of the truth and freedom throughout the years of war. We demand a deterrent international law that prevents this serious violation of journalists’ rights who have not committed any guilt, they just have conveyed the truth as it is to the world. We in Belqees TV channel lost 4 colleagues while covering the truth and conveying it to the local public opinion. Many international bodies may not adopt strict laws. Today we are talking about the International Criminal Court and the entire international humanitarian law, which overlooked enacting an international law that criminalizes the killing of journalists who carry a microphone or a camera to transmit the voice and image of the truth.”
Soundbite (Imran Farhan – Journalist and activist):
“It is time for the countries of the world and the international community to enact deterrent laws to protect journalists who are subjected to violations, as happened yesterday to the Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh, while she was doing her job and wearing a press jacket. The international community now has an opportunity to enact laws that deter all those who try to harm journalists, especially since the targeting of journalists has increased in various parts of the world, and they have become vulnerable to multiple violations.”
