Storyline

Observers in Aden south of Yemen believe there are many challenges ahead for the recently appointed presidential council that will govern the country in place of former president Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. They said that the biggest challenge the council will face upon arrival to Aden is the economic issue, especially the currency crisis that has afflicted the citizens of Yemen. There are also military and security issues. Former president Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi issued a decree on April 7th transferring all presidential power to the council.

  • Soundbite (Majid Al-Dae’ry – Economist and Political expert):

“The main challenges for the council will be the service sector, economy and security in addition to dealing with Houthi militias and recovering the remaining occupied land. The council also has to deal with the lack of enough resources and financial support. Yemen needs to hold a donors conference to receive subsidies that would help achieve economic and social security, which will help overcome obstacles and reach consensus regarding council decisions. The council needs to make changes that would improve administration and governmental functions in order to stop corruption.”

  • Soundbite (Zain Abu Baker Zain Al-Saqqaf – Citizen):

“The main challenges for the 7-member council including the president will be the economic and security issues. The economic issue is more pressing because poverty is prevalent in Yemen. The International Community and Gulf Cooperation Council should work together and help resolve the situation in Yemen as soon as possible.”
