Storyline

Hamad Hospital in north Gaza opened a center for manufacturing high-tech upper bionic limbs that run on electric batteries in order to provide amputees in Gaza with the ability to perform their day to day activities. The private center of the hospital started manufacturing the bionic limbs using advanced equipment which are controlled through signals from the nerve system. The center reportedly provided bionic limbs for 20 cases with 55 cases on the waiting list. The center aims to integrate war and accident amputees into society to help them live normal life.

  • Soundbite (Yousef Abu Al-Rish – Deputy Minister of Health):

“Prosthetic services were provided for amputees in need of lower limb prosthetic. Nowadays, there are high-tech upper limb prosthetics that enable amputees to live and work with ease. There are currently 55 cases on the waiting list for upper bionic limbs. Today 20 cases will be getting prosthetics.”

  • Soundbite (Mohammad Abu Madi – Upper limb prosthetic beneficiary):

“I was injured as a child and my right hand was amputated, which put me through difficult times. However, when I went to Hamad hospital and got the prosthetic my condition improved. The bionic hand can carry 10 kg with a battery life of 2 years.”

  • Soundbite (Fatima Al-Nemir – Project beneficiary):

“I tried a couple of prosthetic manufacturers but they only provided me with a cosmetic prosthetic. This is my first time getting a bionic limb and I’m quite hopeful. Losing a part of one’s body affects the person negatively but prosthetics make the situation easier.”
