Storyline

Due to difficult economic conditions in Gaza Strip, Walaa Abdel Moneim, an Agricultural Engineer, started up a plant nursery in her own land to grow strawberries in hanging baskets, which is popular in the Gazan city of Beit Lahia. High unemployment rates forced the woman to look for another source of income to support her family, so she started a business in the field she loves. Hanging strawberry, also known as red gold, has a yield three times higher than that of the ground. The engineer packs the crop into plastic boxes to sell to merchants or shops.

– Soundbite (Walaa Abdel Moneim – agricultural engineer and owner of the hanging strawberry greenhouse):

“We began the red gold project to produce hanging strawberries in 2020.  However, the production was suspended for six months due to the recent Israeli war on the strip. My passion for farming and the major I studied at university helped me in my business. Hanging strawberry cultivation consumes less space but with more productivity. Each acre of hanging cultivation production is three times higher than that of land cultivation and with healthier fruits.”

– Soundbite (Walaa Abdel Moneim – agricultural engineer and owner of the hanging strawberry greenhouse):

“This project is the main source of income for me and my family. Despite the challenges we face here in Gaza, such as the threat of a sudden war, the lockdown due to the pandemic, and the closure of the borders, I succeeded in achieving my goal with the support of my husband and family.”
